Neuro Trauma Surgical Progressive Care - nights
On 5South we are a
Neuro/Trauma and Surgical Progressive Care Unit. We have 24 patients that are
monitored at all times so our candidates need to have experience with reading
EKGs and be ACLS certified. We are usually in a 3:1 or more likely 4:1 ratio
Neuro: CVAs, Hydrocephalus, brain tumors and resections,
seizures, and TBIs. It will be helpful if they had some neuro background
because this is a difficult patient population to work with. Many times they
are confused and combative so many people have a hard time working with these
patients. Plus their neuro assessments need to be on par because the slightest
neuro change can indicate a huge change in the patients status so any changes
needed to be caught quickly or can have devastating consequences.
Trauma: All the things you see on TV: shooting, stabbings,
MVCs, people falling over rugs etc. Many times this patient population will
have broken bones, head trauma and large wounds that will need to be dressed
multiple times per shift. Usually ever body system is affected in some way,
especially with the heavy trauma patients.
Surgical: GI surgeries and large wound cleaning and
closures. Needs to have an understanding of how to take care of surgical
patients, dress wounds and exposure to multiple types of drains.
